The award first awarded during the Napoleonic Wars in 1813, as been renewed severial times.1st during the Franco-Prussian War, then in WW1 & last by Adolf Hitler during WW2. Prior to WW2 the Medal has only been awarded 17 times, 5 during 1813 for the Napoleonic War, 7 During the Franco-Prussian War 1870 & 5 during WW1 these were to Kaiser Wilhelm11, Paul von Hindenburg, Erich Ludenhorff. Prince Leopold of Bavaria & August von Mackensen. The Grand Cross is about twice the size of the Iron Cross.
