"The M-1 steel helmet was a revolutionary design, with a removable liner housing the suspension and sizing system. A special Airborne version of the helmet, known as the M-1C, was introduced in the 1950s with OD "Y" straps and grommeted chinstrap, and was used early in Vietnam by the 1st Cavalry Division.
The 1st Cavalry Division was the "glamour" division of the Vietnam War, trained to elite status and fully airmobile by helicopter. They were always sent wherever the danger was greatest and the fighting fiercest."
